Rautins Sets Nets On Fire, Dome Management Not Seeking Arson Charges

That was quite a show. Andy Rautins went 9-16 from three point range and eventually put SU’s lead out of arm’s reach over the Coppin State Tywain McKees. He was on fire, en fuego, made it rain, gimme all three of these, other overused SportsCenter phrases. He tied Gerry McNamara’s school record, but GMac set his mark against Brigham Young in the NCAA tournament, so Rautins will have to settle for the program distinctions of most 3’s made in a regular season game and most 3’s made in a Carrier Dome game. Not too shabby for a guy making just his second start since March 2007.

Elsewhere for the Orange, Jonny Flynn and Arinze Onuaku both recorded double-doubles, albeit of different varieties.  I also liked how much the Orange shared the ball and made the passes that led to easy buckets, as only five of SU’s 30 field goals went unassisted.

Rick Jackson got the start yet again and performed well, but his five turnovers were a little disheartening. In contrast, Kristof Ongenaet enjoyed a view from Jim Boeheim’s doghouse and was only let out for a few minutes to do his dirty business, committing a foul and a turnover before returning to his seat.

McKee played a marvelous game as well as Andy, putting up 31 points and even recording six thefts. SU’s D was suspect tonight – multiple teams I saw Paul Harris back way off of his man when he had the ball at the top of the key and both times his man sank the open three.

Also, with the 82-71 victory, SU puts a bow on its non-conference season at 12-1, the school’s best non-con posting since the 2003-04 season. The Orange will get a much-deserved extended break and won’t return to action until December 30 when it meets Seton Hall.
