Paulus to Syracuse is a good thing

Greg Paulus announced today that he will be attending Syracuse in the Fall.  His decision makes sense both academically and athletically.  Newhouse will provide him with a great way to continue his education, and of all the schools he visited, the Orange offer him the best opportunity to make an impact in his one year of eligibility.

However, there’s been a lot of debate among SU fans about whether or not this decision is good for the team.  I’ll argue that it is going to help both immediately and in the long run. Here’s why:

They say there’s no such thing as bad press.  Well maybe the coverage of our football program’s collapse over the past five years is an exception to that rule, but right now, anything that’s going to make Syracuse relevant in the college football world is a good thing.  Most prospects don’t have SU enter their minds when considering their college career.  Regardless of whether or not Paulus can lead us to a 10-win season, there’s going to be a media circus around the situation, and it’s going to turn some heads.  Paulus could be the jump-start we need to get the recruiting game back on track.

Of course he could also help on the field, but we’ll have to wait and see and hope for the best.
