Boeheim Slams The Door On Point Guard Debate

The news going around the SU blogosphere lately stems from Mike DeCourcy’s recent article in which Jim Boeheim postures that Brandon Triche is a better point guard than Jonny Flynn.

Not will be better, not has the potential to be better… is better. Perhaps more importantly is that five months before the official start of practice, Boeheim has anointed Triche as the starter, much to the dismay of Scoop Jardine, who spent all of last season redshirting in an array of striped polos.

Boeheim isn’t one to leave his words up for interpretation, but there are a few ways to think about this; the surprise is in the odd timing. Being a local product, Triche has been on the radar of SU’s recruiting staff for several years, so there’s a chance that the coaching staff may be overvaluing him. Then again, if he’s been in their sights for so long, shouldn’t SU have the best read on him out of everyone? I get what Boeheim means here, that Triche is better for the style of play he wants to implement.

Jonny Flynn gave us more than we could have ever hoped for from a point guard in two years; he knew he had crazy talent, which was a blessing, but also a curse on several occasions when he took ill-advised shots and ran into traffic in the lane.

Personally, everything I’ve heard about Triche, coupled with what I saw from Scoop in a reserve role 2007-08 leads me to believe that Triche is talented enough to leapfrog Scoop on the depth chart. Arinze and Rick Jackson have their spots cemented, and the same goes for transfer Wes Johnson. We know Andy Rautins isn’t going anywhere either, so Scoop is squeezed out by process of elimination and whatever ceiling he has left as a contributor is shrinking by the minute.

“much to the dismay of Scoop Jardine”…..??

Ummm, where have you read that Scoop is “dismayed” by what JB had to say?
Or could it be that you were voicing your own opinion, of what you believe will be Scoop’s reaction? Or maybe that line was just for dramatic effect?

Look, we don’t know where Scoop is with his rehab, & we have no idea where he stacks up vs Triche.
Theres been no indication so far that he’s “dismayed” by that quote, so why don’t we refrain from further idle speculation?
    Just saying……..
