Old College QB Update
Well the Syracuse University football team now has the most talked-about third string quarterback in the country. As many of you probably know, SU recently released an updated depth chart for the upcoming season, and Greg Paulus comes in at third place in the QB race. Granted, this might change once Marrone or anyone else actually sees the kid throw a football. No, all those replays on Time Warner Sports from five years ago don’t count.
Of course, the doubters are still out there. I’m sure they’re up in arms over all the fuss we had to go through just to get a backup backup quarterback. But hey… at least we aren’t the only Northeast school recruiting promising highschool quarterbacks who have spent years playing a different sport…
Meet David Shinskie. A 25-year-old minor league pitcher who just committed to play for Boston College. Like Paulus, he could have had a great tenure as a college QB out of high school, but opted to ply his athletic abilities in a different sport. Unlike Paulus, he never attended college, and therefore has a theoretical 4 years of eligibility left. Yes, BC could have a thirty-year-old throwing passes for them in 2013. Sure, Paulus is a gamble, but this guy seems like an even bigger question mark. It’s good to know Syracuse wouldn’t waste resources chasing someone like this:
“Rutgers and Pitt also wanted Shinskie to visit, according to his father, along with Temple and Syracuse. The unique situation at Boston College, though, allowed Shinskie the most realistic shot at actual playing time.”
Oh. Interesting. Could this be the start of a new trend of old dudes playing college sports? I certainly hope not, but it’ll be something to watch for in the years ahead. It may depend on how this and the Paulus experiment pan out.
